Car Parking In Ashton

Started by: PeterP (11331)

When the Medicentre opened on Council Avenue they did not make any car parking spaces except for medical staff plus 8/9 disabled bays. At times you cannot get a disabled bay because inconsiderate drivers picking their charges up from the school park in the bays and on the double yellow lines. Non disabled drivers must park on the market square and use the zebra crossing on Bryn Street. Now there is talk of building work/shop units on the top half of the market. Where do the council expect people to park if this happens There is limited parking behind the Presidential but where do people park if half the market square is used for units and the other half has the fun fair on it Try finding an empty space on the market after 9-00am now.

They did exactly the same when the new medical centre opened in Standish, a few disabled spaces, then all the rest for Doctors and other staff.

Wigan is well served by public transport, why does everybody need to drive?

Golden Bear

As regards Chandler House, there is parking up the side of the building and at the top or back of the building, if yoo are at the side of the building and you don't want to walk round to the front, you can get via the pharmacy, and at the back, you can go in via the back entrance, and if you need to go down to the ground floor, you can use the stairs or lift, if you cannot get a space anywhere outside of the building, then you will find somewhere across the main road, Poolstock Lane, in the demolished side streets, the staff car park for Chandler House is separate from the public car park, and is barrier controlled

Rio some of the clinics are not on a direct bus route. I once had an appointment at Sherwood Drive Clinic and it meant walking to the bus stop to get a bus to Alexander park or the Saddle then catch another bus to near Sherwood Drive . Then a walk down Sherwood Drive to the clinic , Same but in reverse. I could drive there and back in the time it would take to walk/wait for buses going one way

Stardelta Wigan council has received £6.6 million from the government in levelling up funds to spend on Ashton for various programmes.. One thing I suggested was for Ashton to be made one way. If the plan for the market area goes ahead then more long stay car parking areas will be required to replace the existing places. Ashton town centre is a triangle of streets Gerrard St Bryn St & Wigan Road all with double yellow lines and loading restrictions. Garswood St which runs along side the Market Square has a time restriction of 1 hr and all the supermarkets also have time restrictions Aldi Lidl and the Gerrard Centre even the area off Garswood St is pay& display

The problem with disabled spaces now is the number of motorists who park on them with blue badges who are anything but disabled and the braindead ignorant people who park on them with no badge.

When they get a disability themselves, they might realised why the genurine blue badge owners and their relatives get annoyed!

Draconian action needs to be taken as the problemis going worse!

OC you are right about brain dead motorists misusing the blue badge or idiots with no badges using a disabled bay There are I think ONLY 10/11 disabled bays on public car park/streets for all of AshtonLike I have said try getting into a disabled bay at the medicentre when parents are dropping/picking their kids up from St Oswalds school

Or, as the staff at my nearest supermarket called them, "The selfish drivers reserved parking spaces".

On about this subject, I am surprised that on one has mentioned taxis, I know that getting a taxi from Ashton to somewhere like Pemberton would be expensive, but a lot of folk have no choice, and as regards wheelchair adapted vehicles, most taxi firms have them, and with the new taxi regulations coming in, there will be even more wheelchair accessible taxis available.

If you are going to Boston House or Wigan Infamary or the Thomas Linacre Centre, a popular way folk use to get there is to get the bus into Wigan, and then take a taxi from one of the taxi ranks in Wigan up to the hospital or health centre, this cuts down the cost of transport, particularly if you live in the outlying areas of the Borough, such as Leigh.

As regards the buses, from this Sunday in Wigan and Bolton they are back in public ownership, with the Bee Network becoming operational, and those buses are wheelchair friendly.

Those abusing the Blue Badge should not only have the badge taken off them, but should also have to pay a fine of £1,000 towards provding the revenue for more people to catch others who are making life more difficult for the genurine disabled.

In regards Ashton-in-Makerfield Town Centre (lets keep Tonker happy) those storm shadow missiles, which we gave Ukraine, which they are using to take out the Russian military in Crimea, well the Ukrainians should reprogram those missiles to take out Ashton Town Centre instead
